My Favorites at Goldie’s Ice Cream Shoppe- A Biased Review

Why not promote products and places I love?!  Especially local hot spots in my tiny town.  Today I am proud to spotlight Goldie’s Ice Cream Shoppe, a small but mighty good eats right here in Prairie City, Iowa.

Goldie’s started out as a shop that offered ice cream only, and even then it served as a local favorite.  But when Brad Magg bought the business about 11 years ago, he added hot food to the already delightful menu and surrounding folks grew to love it even more.

The shop sits close to Highway 163, attracting those who pass by on their way to Des Moines and back.   Goldie’s busy seasons come when nearby towns have crowd drawing events, like Tulip Time in Pella or the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines.  People love to stop and enjoy while they are out and about.

The quaint dining room boasts a soda shop kind of feel and seats approximately 30 or less, but during the summer months there is additional seating outside.  The fun, colorful umbrellas over picnic tables make for a summery atmosphere in which to enjoy the edible treats.

The Best Part

So I know you are wondering, what kind of food fare do they offer?  Oh I have been waiting for you to ask!  I will highlight my personal favorites and let you check out the rest of the menu for yourself.  Here they are, starting with my absolute most favoritest favorites down to just my regular favorites.  🙂

  1. The Dutch Letter Twister-  the best in the midwest!  Goldie’s Twisters are soft serve ice cream with any imaginable topping twisted in.  Dutch Letter pastries, featured in Pella bakeries, have a light flaky outside crust filled with a sugary almond paste.  Mix these ingredients into vanilla soft serve ice cream and you get a genius dessert like no other.  But you have to be timely about it.  Goldie’s only serves this kind of Twister in the spring around Pella’s Tulip Time, which is the first weekend in May.  Goldie’s should be promoting these any time now.  I am counting on it!
  2. Peanut Butter Suicide-  yes, my top 2 favorites are both ice cream items.  The Peanut Butter Suicide is a Twister with several types of peanut butter ingredients.  Vanilla ice cream gets mixed with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Butterfinger candy bar and a peanut butter sauce.  Ohhh, it is heavenly.
  3. Ranch Dressing-  they make Ranch from scratch and it is the best.  Sometimes I order food just for the side of Ranch, and then I take home whatever might be leftover to enjoy later.
  4. Onion Rings-  Goldie’s makes a great onion ring.  They are string sliced and oh so yummy- especially with a side of Ranch.
  5. Fried Banana Peppers- the peppers are cut into rings, battered and fried.  I love this unique side that you can’t find just anywhere.  They are really tasty- again, even better with a side of Ranch.
  6. Taco Salad-  this is my usual when I am getting a meal.  It is the crispy shell bowl filled with taco meat, lettuce, cheese, tomato, onion, and black olives.  But of course you can leave off any ingredient you don’t like.  If you want, it comes with a side of salsa, sour cream and of course, Ranch (a must in my book).
  7. Tenderloin Sandwich-  this is what Goldie’s is known for and probably would rank as the #1 favorite item for many customers.  It is fabulous on the taste buds and on the eyes.  Goldie’s hand-breads each pork tenderloin before they fry it.  The sandwich is served with a knife because it is HUGE- a big piece of meat on a big bun.  An impressive meal experience all the way around.

And there you go, several suggestions for a special treat.  Just a heads up, Goldie’s can be very busy during the summer!  But the crowds just add fellowship to the food.  It’s a good time and warm weather is right around the corner (I am assuming anyway)!

As I mentioned earlier, ice cream is a personal and family favorite.  Each of my family members have their own ideas on the best ice cream combinations.  To find out more ideas on what ingredient combinations work well when twisted into ice cream, simply send me your email!  You will get a free PDF on my family favorites!  SEE BELOW!  And you are under no obligation to remain part of my email squad, although I really hope you stay!  I love sharing life with my squad!
